Dark and not-so-cold Helsinki

Posted by walterheck

After arriving in Helsinki, I immediately rolled into the “Nordic Couchsurfing Meeting”. It was a lot of fun, with a disturbing amount of the same people that also attended the big Sinterklaas meeting the weekend before in Holland. Nevertheless a lot of fun though.

Just before I left Holland I got my first paying gig for OlinData and I still had a lot of work to do when I arrived in Helsinki. So I only participated in the evening events of the CS meetign and spent the rest of my time working my ass off. The project was completed successfully, so all was good on Wednesday again.

Since I wanted to divide my attention between my two awesome ex-roommates, I decided to spend my firts couple of days with Duke and his new roommate Heydi, and the last couple of days with Tiina. The whole week was just great. According to Finnish tradition filled with alcohol of course, but also with old and new friends.

I saw some of Duke’s performances, even though he was sick as a dog. I saw some random band that had Lauri’s (Tiina’s boyfriend) friend playing in it. I spent a night on the couch in Lauri’s awesome gamer paradise of a living room. We went to an idyllic little town just outside Helsinki for a few hours. Lots of more stuff, and all of it was good times :)

I was almost sad to leave again on Monday. I had said that I was going to hitchhike back to NL. When the final decision came, I almost caved and chose a boatride from Helsinki to Rostock in Northern Germany. This would cut my distance back from 2300Km to 650Km and only cost me 50 euro more. In the end I was strong though, and decided to do what I had challenged myself to: hitchhike through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany in the darkest week of the year in temperatures far below 0 degrees (celsius, that is 😉 ).

Read more about that adventure in the next blog post though :)
