Preparing for the future

Posted by walterheck

I am more than halfway through my time in Brasil, and I have been away from home for more than 6,5 months. It is becoming apparent to me that my new life is so much more interesting, challenging and rewarding than my old life in Holland (not that i didn’t like that, au contraire!). That is why I have decided not to return home anytime soon. I still have no planned end date. The maximum for now is august of 2009, so I can attend the wedding of my good friends Ewoud and Irene. Of course I am no walking bank, so it is time for me to start thinking about the future, and how I am going to pay for my life on the road. Sit tight and follow the jump to read about my plans, you’re gonna be surprised :)

Being an ultimate geek, of course my first thought was programming. I have come up with three great projects that all have the potential of making me a decent income. 10-20€ per day would be more than enough to live off, so I don’t need much. Two of these projects involve building websites, which is something that has always interested me, but I have never actually engaged in it. So the last few weeks I am reading up on PHP-programming and the wonderful world of the Zend framework. Pretty straightforward stuff, until you actually want to build stuff. Why can I not use my beloved Delphi for this?!

The third project involves a piece of software combined with a website. Although I cannot tell you too much about this project (I don’t want someone else to run away with my ideas :) ), I think it has a high potential of being successful.

Of course, there is more to the world than computers, so I looked into other things as well. I found a good website for volunteer work in South America. Apparently it is completely normal to charge a volunteer around 50-100USD per week to work for you. What did I miss? wasn’t voluntary work supposed to be voluntary? I don’t expect to get paid, but to have to pay to work for someone is wrong in my eyes. Luckily, aforementioned website has some good links for free volunteer work.

My latest discovery however is what will make many of you wonder if I have gone crazy. Are you sitting? good! I found a post by someone being a balloon twister. That is a person creating balloon animals, usually for kids. He said that he was doing this in the UK and was making enough money to have a very good lifestyle out of it. That attracted my attention: it is a simple skill, usable all over the world. You make children happy, the material is cheap and the involvement in the culture you are in is big, much bigger than with computer programming. So I kept this idea in the back of my mind for a while. It kept popping out however. So a few days ago I decided to act upon it. I have ordered 750 balloons from the US, for 75 USD including shipping and handling. That means around 0.06€ per balloon. Unfortunately it will take around one month for the balloons to actually get here, I can’t wait to get started practicing!

I know many of you will be skeptic, but I see it as another new adventure, that can potentially be a good way of living on the road. This could be my main source of income after I run out of money. I will keep you guys posted on what happens with this!

  1. Ondertussen alles van http://www.balloon-animals.com/ uit je hoofd leren! Klinkt beter als php-en op vakantie…

    Groetjes,

    Pa.

  5. Walter, you are out of your mind… 😉
But that state of mind is quite the right one for having HEAPS of fun. 😀

  6. Old news for me (being an insider :-
    Agree with Heydi!

Just read that there comes a new Collective in Alaska, will you join them?

Then some news from Holland, instead of having a white Christmas, it seems we’re gonna have a white Eastern this year! ** wondering what All Gore had to say about this **

  7. Congratulare on your birthday, man!

  8. Hoi Walter!
